"Class...Class..." "Yes.. Yes..." Reflection of the Speaking Class 4 first meeting

English Version.

“Class...class...”
“yes...yes...”

Well, that’s the catchiest one of several rules that Mr. Taufiq Effendy applied on my speaking class. If he says “class…class…” we should reply with “yes…yes…”, the total of “yes” should be equal with the “class…” that he shouts. He often played us by shouting uncountable amounts of “class” so we couldn’t answer the exact numbers of “yes”. Can you imagine how witty he is actually?

Anyway, before I continue my story, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Ellena, a sophomore year student on English Education Department, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. This semester, I have the opportunity to continue my pre-requisite subject of speaking class 4 and meet such a fantastic lecturer.

As I had taken speaking class on my previous semester, this one is kind of different. It gave such a fascinating first impression. The lecturer, the methods of teaching, and the class environments are amazing. Those were represented on our first meeting a few days ago.

First of all, I’ve got a really inspiring lecturer, Mr. Taufiq Effendy. I am 100% sure that not only me who think this way, because it is so true. The long tough journey of vision impairment experienced is very touching and inspiring at the same time. He told us how he struggled to move on with his condition. But he succeeded. He could achieved his goals even got many scholarships. He proofed himself that he could do what others people do. He is on my list of respectable people, indeed.

Second of all, I would like to give my thumbs up to the method that he uses for teaching speaking class. As I stated earlier, he has several rules in class that should be followed by all of the students without any exception.  He doesn’t let us to speak in any language but English. This rule is simple “You are not given permission to speak or even to whisper in Bahasa Indonesia or any others language more than 10 times. If you are getting caught, you’ll be punished to write novel and publish it within a week”, it’s so interesting right. You know what? Basically, the point of speaking class actually is we speak in English fluently and correctly, but I’ve never experienced a very dynamic speaking class like this before. The previous semesters were most likely partly English speaking, because we still mixed Bahasa Indonesia and English, but yesterday unexpectedly my peers are using only English during the class. It means that Mr. Taufiq Effendy’s method is incredibly effective. By the way, that also means nobody wants to be a novelist in my class, not in a week.

Third of all, the class environment that I had yesterday is my ideal class. I think, it can be like that is because of the combination of the humorous lecturer who gives a good vibes on class and the fun activities that we had. A very serious lecturer often makes the class boring and stiff, but he got funny jokes like “what did I say” and everyone be like thinking hard about what did he really said when actually he was joking , “what did I say” was “what did I say”. It was a bit confusing at first, but then the students get smarter, and get along well with his jokes. That kind of entertainment is very amusing and makes the class interesting. Moreover, the activity that we had in class was very interactive. We were asked to tell the city of our dream to our peer (randomly picked by counting numbers) that we’ve had prepared before class, score each other, record our speaking, and transcribed it for the next assignment. He also explained about modals and to infinitive. A very unique assignment is this one, blogs writing. Writing is not a thing, but writing speaking class reflection in blog by tagging the lecturer social media is something. I don’t know if this kind of assignment is outdated, but I find it rare and that’s what makes it special.

Hence, Speaking class first meeting was excellent. Hopefully the next meetings will be as great as I’ve experienced, and the rules will remain the same till this semester finish. I also expect to be more fluent and confident in speaking English.

Class... Class ..."
"yes… yes..."

Bagaimanapun, sebelum saya melanjutkan cerita saya, saya ingin memperkenalkan diri.

Dosen yang sangat serius sering membuat kelas menjadi membosankan dan kaku, tetapi dia mempunyai lelucon lucu seperti "what did I say?" dan semua orang seperti berpikir keras tentang apa yang sebenarnya dia katakan ketika dia benar-benar bercanda, "What did I say?" adalah "what did I say?".

Unfinished Short Story

Cafe Daydream I remember that   I met him two years ago in a coffee shop near by the Maryglots lake. Friday night with Barry Manillow’s famous song on the played accompanied me sitting alone at the seat by the window. The drizzles outside became my sight view while I was waiting for my chocolate milkshake to arrive because I had nothing to be done since my phone out of battery. People’s crowded footsteps could be heard clearly by me. I looked up the café’s door every time the people passed by. Suddenly, someone that was familiar appeared through the door alone. He looked similar with someone I knew. I observed him from top to toe. A bit messy brown hair fit his small face. He wore a moss green inner turtle neck with a dark brown long coat and black skinny pants; all were perfect but one, his puffy grey slipper. He walked straight to the order table, I didn’t what he was order he did it by pointing at the menu screen and comb his hair at the same time. Then, he looked ar...

Viola vs Violin

VIOLA VS VIOLIN Being a fan of classical music gives me new the knowledge of some instruments. Even though I am not a musician, I am interested in classical instruments and orchestra. One of the instruments that attract me the most is Violin. Before I go deeper to know more about violin, I thought violin is the English translation of Biola in Indonesia and had no clues about viola, but after I watched some YouTube videos and did some web-surfing, I realized that viola and violin are two different instruments. Here are some differences and similarities between those look alike instruments. If I catch a glimpse of both instruments, they look like twin. I might call viola as violin and other way around. But if we observe the details, their differences on physical appearances are obvious. The wooden materials and accessories such as case, bow, strings, tuner, chin and shoulder rest might deceive us, but if we look further on their size, measurements and clef I can tell they ar...
